About This Chapter
The scene opens with the narrator, a thirty-year-old bachelor, asking the young man, "is it fun to teasing me?" The young man replies, "at first, you made me misunderstand." The narrator explains that the two men have become friends, and that they no longer owe each other any money. The young bachelor then asks the narrator to take a photograph with him and his bride and groom. He tells the young woman that he has found out that she was having an affair with a child and that he is "so unlucky." The young woman tells the narrator that she is afraid that her life of solitude will end if she does not take care of herself. She tells him that her house has been robbed and that her sisterwu has gone back to her family's home to raise the children of her husband's new wife. She asks the young bachelor to tell her the story of his encounter with the child and to stop acting like he still cares about the boy.
