In this chapter, we learn that the protagonist is a thirty-year-old man who works as a secretary. He's happy with his job, but he wishes he could get a raise so that he could spend more time with his brother-in-law, who is a bachelor. He also tells us that he's not sure why he gave up his job so easily. He wonders if there's a better way to go about it.
