The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Guizhou, in which he begs Guizhou to marry him. He asks Guizhou if he loves him, and Guizhou replies that he does. Guizhou tells him that his father is in a critical condition and needs surgery. He tells Guizhou that he has borrowed money from his father, but that Guizhou is afraid that he will not be able to pay it back. He says that the most hideous aspect of their marriage is the fact that they both bury their secrets in their hearts. He adds that he is afraid of not being able to repay the money he borrowed from Guizhou's father
