About This Chapter
The scene opens with the art teacher, chenghuan, "like a shooting star" hurdling across the studio floor. He's been busy teaching his students, and the teacher asks him to help him look at his students' paintings for two days. The teacher tells him that it's the end of class, and he's going to have to go and look for the student. He tells the teacher that he has been teaching the student more times than the teacher has taught him, and that's why he can't figure out why the student acts the way she does. He asks the teacher if she smokes in class, but the teacher says she doesn't smoke. The art teacher tells the senior student that he'd like to look at her paintings, but he has to go into the store to buy sketching pencils and canvases. He says that he hasn't been drawing for long, and has forgotten to check the time. He notices that the student's paintings seem to have aged so quickly, and wonders if she's left the studio in a hurry. The senior says he didn't think she'd leave, but it surprised him that she did.
