This chapter introduces the protagonist, a young man who works late at night. He has trouble finding a car to take him to work because of the number of people who are working overtime. He asks his supervisor, a senior, for a ride to the district where he lives. The two men have been working together for a long time, and they have been stumbling onto one another after work. They have agreed to leave their jobs together, but the car that Senior takes him back from work seems to be a bit shabby. He tells the protagonist that he often gives Senior gifts to thank him for taking him back to work so many times.
