In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, a young woman named Raina Annie, who has just returned from a trip with her fiance, William Brandon. Raina tells her fiance that she is pregnant with his child, but she refuses to tell him the name of the baby. When she learns that the baby is not William's, she tells him that she has left pictures of the child as proof of her pregnancy. She says that she wants to be Mr. Brandon, and that she wishes to marry him. She tells him she has been comforted by him for a day, but that she knows that she and her husband have nothing. She is afraid that the family will try to drag her down, and so she tells her that her manuscript has been received before, and she wanted to bring the manuscript home to her so that she could talk to the designer. The designer says that the manuscript is very intelligent, although it cannot be used right now, as the manuscript will not be used again for some time. The design director says that William cares about her and that he will help her in any way he can.
