This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter. In this flashback, we are introduced to Carter, who has been beaten and is now in the hospital. Carter's mother, Zennith, is also present. She tells us that she has been instructed by her grandmother to go to the police station and get some ointment for her grandson. She says that if she does not go, she will tell her grandmother that she is slacking and that she will go back to get the ointment.
