About This Chapter
Munakata wonders what's going on with Ajima and wonders if he's been wrapped up in some sort of case. He's not sure, but he doesn't think it's a good idea for him to insult a senior police officer. He also thinks that Ajima is just trying to cover up for something. He wonders if there's any reason why Ajima hasn't told the police about the accident. He thinks that it would be better if he didn't tell them about it, since they'd think that he'd been involved in a crime. He says that he was riding next to Ajima when the accident happened, and that he can't believe that the police officer would think that she'd hit the man. He goes on to say that she distracted him by telling him to check out the mirrors, and then made him slam the brakes when he got to the man's side. If he hadn't, he says, she wouldn't have been able to do what she did. He adds that if he had jumped out the car, too, she would have been unable to perform her job. He then wonders if the police had called the ambulance, since it was obvious that the man wasn't dead yet. He knows that if it were him, he would have called the police, but if it was the other way around, then he would not have been called. He tells Ajima that he just wants to go away and forget about it.
