In this chapter, Shmoop introduces us to the school newspaper editor, a man named Noboru Aoyamada, who is also the vice-president of the school's volunteer photography club. He is the first candidate to be elected president of the student body, and he is a shoo-in for the job. The students are asked what they would do if they were elected president, and the first question is: "What do you plan to do as president?" The students agree that they would work together to make the world a better place, and Shmo points out that each of them could become a powerful force for good in the community. He also mentions that he has taken pictures of many girls at school, and that he would like to have one of them as a "smile" . He then looks at the London paper, which has an interview with a candidate for president. The interview is short, but Shmo notices that the name "Smirch" has been misprinted. Shmo wonders aloud why the paper has such a misprint, and wonders aloud what would happen to him if he were to become president. He wonders aloud if the girl in the picture is using illicit temptations to get into the school. The school has not even started, and there are no students left. The girl for 20,000 is outrageous, Shmo says, because she could be the president of a school that has barely begun. The only thing Shmo can think of is that someone made the picture, and no one knows who made it.
