The scene opens with Emelina's declaration of love for the new knight-in-waiting. She asks the knight why he didn't let her go, and the knight replies that he was "negligent" in allowing her to wear the clothes she had given him. Emelina tells the knight that she has always been a member of the "gloomy light" religion, and that her back was injured during the mission, but that she would not do anything to hurt the faith. She begs the knight to give her a second chance, but the knight refuses, saying that he will bear any punishment for her. He tells Emelina that she will no longer be his "handmaiden" and "chief of staff" , but will live as his "slave" for life.
