This chapter opens in a fishpond, where the three young men are trying to sell fish caught in the pond. One of the young men has lost money selling books, so he's copying them to make some extra cash. He's worried that his heroine will figure out that he lost money, and she'll figure it out for him. The young men try to sell the fish to him, but he can't stand the idea of selling books for money. He has a pond nearby, and he can use the water to catch fish and sell them. He tells the other young men to come with him to the fish pond, and they all agree to go.
