Lin asks if he can come to school with him every day. He says that his mother will be okay with it, but that his stepmother does not want them around. He tells his father that he has grown up and that it is time for him to take some responsibility and learn to work. His father tells him that he is nearly in labor and that he should not worry because they have a small family farm in the south that would make him a good manager. Lin says that he will not stay at the grange because he wants to go back to school.
