After a long time away from school, the narrator returns to his old stomping grounds at a high school in the city of New York. He finds that the hallways are empty and that the students are back in class. He tells the teacher that he's late and apologizes for being late, but the teacher doesn't seem to mind. The teacher tells him to sit down, and the narrator tells the girl that she's in charge of the class and that she should get the heck out of her seat. The girl is shocked that the teacher would let a student like her be in charge, and she tells him that the other students in the class must have been patronizing her to let her be boss. The narrator tells her that she is from the "Internal Association" and that there was a formal declaration of a war earlier in the school year. She says that she will take the girl on first-hand, and then she'll put the other student in his place.
