In this chapter, Cai Ming-liang tries to convince his sister-in-law, Madame Cai-Liang, to leave him behind. He tells her that he wants to protect her when he grows stronger, and that she is his favorite. She is a useless idiot, he says, and she should not have to know what happened between him and Madame Chennan. She should go away and find some young people to take care of her.
