About This Chapter
The Governess arrives home and asks to see her face. She tells the Governess that her family is not home right now and that she has to go to her room to talk to her lover, i.e., to find out what is going on with her. She asks him to tell her what is happening with her, and he tells her that he is sorry that she is upset, and that he meant to make fun of her. He then asks her to tell him what she thinks of him, and she tells him that she does not approve of him. She then asks him why he does not want to do anything with her right now, and when he says that he wants to do it with her she says that it is a joke. She says that she thought he was joking around, and then she asks why he would say that. He replies that he wanted to do something with her and she said that she did not want him to do that. She goes on to say that everyone does it, like that girl who left school for saying something that made her leave. He says that this is because she said something that was not true. He asks her why she would mention it, but she says it is not true, it is just that she wants to be with him. He tells her to take things slow, and they go off to talk about a package that has just arrived for her. When he gets home he finds that the package was delivered on a woman, and asks if he should be ashamed of himself for being so critical of others. She replies that she likes to be critical, but that she condemns others for how they see her putting value on logic and common sense, and yet she fails to conform to them. She reminds him that he should stop being critical of her and stop being so bad mouthing her.
