At the end of the festival, the students decide to go to the haunted house for a night of drinking and singing. One of the students, Sonezaki, asks the others to pretend that they love him in the "person's shadow," a reference to the legend that says that at the bonfire, the flames will "cast a shadow" on the person who is in love with him. The students agree that they will pretend to love each other in this way.
