The brothel owner, Edward, is furious with his daughter's mother, Mariane, for allowing her daughter to be seduced by a "baron" . Mariane is furious that her son-in-law is "in the wrong" , and she accuses him of being a "brat" for allowing his daughter to fall in love with a "cheap girl." She tells him to stop his "angry words" and to "stop those angry words," or she will "regret them." Mariane tells him that she is not happy that Mariane isn't married to him, but that he is "openly flirting" with his mistress.
