The chapter opens with a soliloquy by yong zhao. yong tells zhao that he will not be able to see his enemy suffer because of failure. He tells yong to calm down and tells him that he is not ready to make enemies of wan family. He reminds yong that he used to be shangqing's sister and that she is a god daughter of yong's family. When yong asks yong if he can make decisions about the two families, yong replies that it was not the wanshang or the fengs that incited him to be here. He says that lin and yong tricked his father for 18 years and that he would have happily married them back if he could bring them home. lin is an illegitimate daughter, he says, meaning that she has never been meant to marry a good family. She tries to seduce yong in his box one night, but yong denies it. He asks him to put down his gun and to be clear about where he is in the world. wan says that he has disgraced the family by fighting against them on his own. He calls for them to divide up their property and live separate from now on.
