In this chapter, the narrator defends his sister, Shuzhen, against the charges of plagiarism leveled against her by her father. Shuzhen's father is a member of the Feng family, a prominent family in Shanghai, and she is the god daughter of the family. Her father will throw her out of school if she is found to have plagiarized her father's research. The narrator points out that Shuzhen has no talent for medical research, and that her father will be very angry if he finds out that her sister has been stealing from him. He wants to know why Shuzhen is being so cruel to her family. He shows her a file that contains a sample of a drug that she has developed. The sample is of a by-product that can prevent ovarian cancer, and the sample Shuzhen developed is of an anti-cancer drug. He says that he planned to give the finished product to his father after completing his research, but now that he has found out that his sister has stolen from him, he is done with her. He wonders if Shuzhen was having sex with her psychiatrist at home, and wonders why she is so ungrateful to her sister. She could have just told everyone that they had worked on the drug together, but she is too selfish to do that. She had to ruin the future of the school so that she could rise when the product is released, she says. She says that she would have called the police if she had stolen something, but her father had prevented her from doing so. She feels sorry for Shuzhen and says that someday, she will get revenge on her.
