About This Chapter
The scene shifts to a perfumery in Paris. The owner of the perfumery is in the middle of a long line of people waiting to enter the building when a woman approaches him. The woman tells him that rumors have spread about the man's good nature and that he should not hesitate to treat his child. The perfumer, however, is the last person in the line. He is angry that he is last in line and asks the woman to wait for his turn. She agrees to wait, and the woman runs away. The smell of the perfumer's cologne fills the air, and she realizes that she is being watched. She is frightened by the smell, and when she sees that the perfumer is smiling at her, she runs away from the scene. The scent of the perfume is so strong that she cannot see the perfumer. She realizes that the smell is caused by her mistake, and that she has come to apologize for it. She asks the man why he visited her during the day, and he tells her that he had to come because he had a problem with one of his employees. When she asks him why he came to visit her, he says that he did so because she had a knife in her hand.
