In this chapter, we learn that Dimsdale's power was created by his wife, Lilia, and that she has been using it to her advantage. Lilia is now pregnant, and Dimsdale is the father of her child. When Lilia asks Dimsdale if he wants to see her, Dimsdale tells her that he does not want her to see him, because it would be inappropriate for him to do so for her own personal reasons. He tells her to come to his house, where he will be able to take care of Lilia and give her the care she needs.
