This chapter opens with a flashback to the early days of the novel. The flashback is to the time when the two girls were wards together in the same hospital. The doctor tells the girls that they will have to stay together for the rest of their lives if they want to live together. The two girls agree that they must stay together, but they are saddened by the fact that the doctor seems to have lost interest in them. They are both sad that they can no longer be friends, and they both wish they could be with the doctor.
