This chapter opens with a conversation between kirakun and kun, who are discussing the recent events in their apartment building. Predictably, the conversation is interrupted by the arrival of a train. . The two exchange pleasantries, and the conversation turns to the topic of kun's job prospects. The young woman explains that she has been unemployed for ten months, and that she is now able to buy her friend's birthday present. She also reveals that her husband, who was only 27 years old, was involved in a traffic accident and has been confined to his apartment ever since. She tells the young man that she wants to take him out for a "change of pace" , but he has refused to do so. She then tells him that she read an article on astrology that if you saw five airplanes in one day, "something good will happen" . She asks if okamura is okay, and he responds that he is not. Then she asks if she can speak to him about his feelings for her friend. He says that he does not want to tell her that he has found something else he wants to do right, and she says that it is not like she is trying to cheer him up. She goes on to explain that she gave her friend some medicine, and when she is better, she can hold on to the medicine for her. She gives her friend an envelope and thanks her for giving her such a nice present.
