The next morning, Roxane is still in the attic, sorting through the piles of books that she has collected over the past few days. She tells Roxane that Miss Jessel has asked her to help her gather all of her schoolbooks so that she can pass an exam to get into the university. Roxane says that she does not want to be like her friends, who are strangers to her, and that she wants to help them before she goes back to school. She asks Roxane if he will help her find some of the books, and he says that he will, but that he does not know which books she wants him to help.
