It's morning, and we're told that it's a bit of a lonely day for Mariane outside. She's been cooped up all day with her father, and she's worried about what he's going to do to her now that she rejected him. Mariane tells us that she accepted the engagement out of her family's will, but that she doesn't like Mariane. She wants to make sure that she and Mariane fall in love one day, and that she'll be the one to marry her.
