The Governess is shocked to find out that her husband is now a "handicap" . She tells the Governess that she has been climbing the social ladder by marrying a man. She asks how she is so proud of herself. She says that she knows what her sister is trying to say, but she doesn't want to hurt the feelings of the man she loves. She is sorry to see her husband in such a bad condition, and she says that even if he can't walk, she won't give him up either.
