About This Chapter
In this final scene of the play, we learn that the baeks are the most powerful family in the world, and that their eldest child, the eldest son, has the power to rule over the rest of the family. This is because the eldest child has the ability to "drive away" the fragments of his father's body. This ability is passed down through the generations, and the children of the eldest baek inherit the family's "powers." This is why, as the narrator points out, "Dong Suh" tried to keep her father in her hands. She was probably "awed" by Dong's ability to drive the fragments away, since she herself couldn't see them in the small portions that he could. The narrator tells us that humans are only "cruel enough" to trample on the "kind" that they are, and yet they continue to insist on protecting their own kind. He says that he feels as though something is "snapped" inside of him, and asks the narrator to pry open the door of the house so that he can "do anything" if he wants to. He tells the narrator that he should "rip apart the enemy" in front of him and "defile their hands." The narrator says that this is a good idea, and he suggests that the man should "shut up" and
