In this chapter, the Underground Man explains to his father how he came to be. He tells his father that he was unable to grow a flower because he was trapped in the body of his dead father. The Underground Man asks his father why he had trapped him in his father's body. He says that he opened his eyes to meet his father and that he doesn't want to be killed. He asks why his father wants him to kill him. His father tells him that he looks like his father.
