About This Chapter
In this chapter, we find out that the girl from the beginning of the story is a middle-school student named Reita. She's friendly and open-hearted, but she's also very hostile to everyone around her, including her father, who's been hanging out with the other boys at the school. Reita and her father have a crush on one another, but they're not really in love. They're just friends, and they don't even know each other's names. When the narrator asks the father why he's hanging out so much with the boys, the father tells him that he doesn't want to get into a fight with them, but he can't figure out how to explain his feelings to his daughter. The father tells the narrator that he has fallen in love with Reita, and the girl is glad to see him. He's sorry that he got involved in the fight, but it's clear that he and Reita are very close, and that she has to fall for him eventually. The dad tells the father that everyone knows that he likes Reita's moms and her partying, and he feels sorry for him because he knows that her life is boring and uninteresting, and she never had a boyfriend. He also tells the dad that he can tell that she likes him because she seems familiar with his punching style, which reminds the father of his own. He asks the dad if he can just tell her that she'll be coming over to his house for work the next day. The man says that he'll have work tomorrow, but the narrator swears that he hasn't been in the house for a long time.
