In this chapter, Hiroshi continues his story of his life as a thief. As a child, he used to work as a light-fingered thief in the western provinces of Japan. When he was a young man, however, he became a hardened criminal, working as a hired hand at a brothel in the town of Mount Yoshino, in the west of the country.
