About This Chapter
When the ferryman approaches, the bag boy tells him that he has come to tell him a story. The bag boy says that he prefers to be alone, and that he likes to tell stories to help him get through the day. He tells the man that it is not his place to change the woman who raised him a killer. The man replies that he does not want to change her, but he does want to tell the story of his father, a famous rakugo artist. He says that his father was crazy for the artist, and the story is that a man buys a painting that is supposed to be the ghost of an old man. The ghost comes out, tells the owner the truth, and then the man drinks the wine. The old man does not like the wine, but his son does. He wants to see his father's portrait, but cannot do it when the old man is around or he is in plain sight. He also wants to play the part of a shibai, or a child, in order to get the ghost to come out and tell his father the truth.
