This chapter opens with a flashback to the Ming-Ang War, in which the old woman tells the old man that she has found a "nice woman" . The old man asks her to come back with him to the fort to be mistress of it. The woman says that she is already engaged to a man and that she came to find him. She tells the man that he can come with her to the mountaintop and they can have sex. The man tells her that she should cover her face a little so that she will attract danger for herself if she is alone. He says that he always thought everyone would be kind to her, but now that he has seen her, he thinks that she looks too beautiful. He tells her to wait until he finds her and then he will find her. He also says that the man who shot him has been hanging out with her for three years and that he will be worried if he hears of her secret. He adds that he kept this secret from the man so that he wouldn't be able to find her and prevent her from finding her master. He asks the man where he is and the man tells him that he is looking for him. He then says that his finger got "scalded" by the wax on the letter he has written. He wants to go and ask the man to deliver the letter to the old fort, where two people have died. The corpse handler says that they were killed by the plague, and that the letter should be delivered to the person who received it
