In this chapter, Shu-Li tries to convince Gu-Li that he's not mad at him for saving someone's life. He's just pointing out that there aren't any boys around Shu's age who would fall in love with a man like him. He also points out that if he wants to go down to the mountain with the man, he can do so without worrying about whether or not he'll be suitable for the man. Shu says that he can't stay with him forever because he won't even be able to see the girl who was so weak when he first came to the village. She'll turn white and her back will turn hunched. He tells her that she can go back to her master first, but she can wait until she's ready to die. She says that she doesn't want her master to leave her, because she'd rather die than be left alone with him. She also says that her chest hurts from the cold, and she wishes she could sleep first.
