About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's just finished washing his clothes. He's in love with the guy who works for him, and they're in a relationship. He asks her if she'd like to talk to him about drinking, and she says she'll do so. She also tells him that she's not drunk, and that he should treat her better. The narrator says that he never felt like he was leaving his hometown when he first came to work. He was renting a room from someone else, and he had no money. When he first started working, he felt miserable. He trusted the wrong man, and owed a lot of money. He asked his father for some money, and the man told him that if he hadn't shown up in the way he did, he'd never know how bad the situation would have been. He also says that if she had not come to work like that, he would've never known how bad it would be. He tells her that she can just support him, but she doesn't respond. She asks him if he has said anything that leaves a deep impression on her. He says he hasn't. She's angry that she didn't get a good night's sleep.
