In this chapter, we are introduced to several of the characters of the novel. The first person we meet is the narrator, who tells us that he is a student of the same school as the protagonist, and that he has a crush on the protagonist's sister, who is also a student. He also tells her that his brother, a student named Ganchao, is also in the same class as hers, and he is very jealous of Ganchao's success in school. Ganchao is the top of the class, and the protagonist is the last person in the class. The two girls discuss the upcoming exam, which is to be given at the same time as the entrance exam to the university. The students are divided into two groups, one that is led by the protagonist and the other by the other student. The protagonist is in the first group, and his sister is the second.
