About This Chapter
At the entrance to the city, Dr. Bledsoe is astonished to find that all of the bodies have been extracted from the city's red light district. He wonders how he will be able to extract enough parts to build the "shadow egg" . He also wonders about the damage to the epigonads, which are responsible for the development of the nervous system. He is worried that the bodies will not survive the "remarkable" temperature of the city. He fears that the conveyor belt will lead to a "great sphere" , which will dissect the bodies and take their organs. He feels that he is headed for "slaughter" and wonders why the instruments did not pick him up immediately. He tells the overseer that the incal told him that whenever he loses faith in the system, one of his four parts will "take control" of the system. The overseer says that he does not want to be "cut up into pieces" again. He thanks the darkness for bringing the In-Tech with him. He says that the holy darkness is preparing a special ceremony to "slice and dicing" just for him. The narrator tells the narrator that the "great shadow egg generator" will cut out his eyes and that he should think of it as "the first time in his existence" that he can be useful.
