About This Chapter
In this short scene, the audience is introduced to the protagonist, who is a member of the Paris sexual credit union. He has just returned from a meeting with the robot policeman, who has captured him and taken him back to his apartment. The protagonist is shocked to find that the robot has returned with the body of the dead man. He is also shocked to learn that the man's body was found in a small box in the back of the apartment, which the protagonist had hidden from the robot police. He fears that the men who have placed the body in the box are just "lovers" who want to "plant the dagger" in its back. He wonders what he should do with the box, and wonders if the man is just "propaganda" for the city. He also wonders if he should kill the man, who he believes has been preaching for the past few days. He tells the protagonist that he must tell the people of Paris the fate of the city, and that they must learn their fate now. He says that he has seen the glow between the fingers of the man who is dead, and he fears that he will have to kill him. He then tells the audience that they are witnessing a "fiercely pitched battle" between two groups of men, one of whom is an assault squad and the other a crasher
