The chapter opens with a conversation between the narrator and the other members of the school's track and field team. The narrator tells the other girls that he's been going to the "anti-mask group" and that he doesn't know why they're there. He's just been hanging out with them, and they don't seem to care. They're just trying to catch up with him. The other girls tell the narrator that if he tries to run away, no one will catch up to him. But if he runs away, they'll be able to catch him, too. They also tell him that they've been looking for someone who has "black haired" . They want to know if she has any teeth, and if she does, they want her to tell them what she's wearing. If she has black haired teeth, they say, then she'd be a spy for them. She's not a spy, they tell her, but she should keep it a secret to her friends and family. They tell her not to take off her mask if she runs into someone who looks like a courier. She should also keep her mask on if she sees someone wearing a mask. The chapter ends with a soliloquy by the narrator in which he says that the "teeth" gang is not serious about recruiting him.
