This chapter opens with a flashback to a time when Mishima was a student at the University of California, Berkeley. Mishima, who is now an employee at the university, is in love with one of the students, a young man named matsutani. The two of them go out drinking together, but Mishima is too drunk to remember the details of the night's events.
