About This Chapter
Dr. Ren's wife gives him a new set of clothes, which he promptly mends. He's a freeloader, so he offers to help, but he's not used to being able to do so. He doesn't know how to sew, and the clothes are ripped. He wonders what his former master's name is, and wonders if there's something wrong with his grip. He also wonders if the jade on the clothes is taunting him, and he wonders if it's time to bathe. He asks what's wrong with the clothes, and is surprised to find that they look exactly like his old clothes. He thinks that he returned them, but then he realizes that they're also full of silk, which means they've been given money. He realizes that he agreed to help out, but now that he can't do so, he feels powerless and wounded. He says that he heard rumors about him recently, and that's what made him give up his martial arts. He knows that if he talks about them, he'll be betraying his master, and so he won't be able to help him anymore. He tells Ren that in the night, he learned that the victor is the king. In the world, he says, even possessing martial arts, he couldn't make a savior. It's easier for a cripple to be a victim than it is for a hero to be saved
