This chapter opens with a conversation between the protagonist and his sketchbook companion. The protagonist tells his companion that he's going on a "sign language training trip" with a group of other students. The group includes a guy named Tsujimura, who works at the school, and a girl named Itsuomsani, who is the protagonist's best friend. The two of them plan to go out for dinner together, but the protagonist doesn't want to be alone with him. He's also not sure if he wants to hang out with the other students alone, or whether he'd be better off hanging out with his best friend, whose name is Yonuya. Yonuya, however, is the only one of the two girls who seems interested in the protagonist, and she's the one who asks the protagonist questions about his life. She asks him about his crush, and the protagonist confesses that he has a crush on another girl. He admits that he feels pressured to ask the other girls to call him, and he feels that his crush might be hooking him up with one of them.
