This chapter opens with a description of Sidonia's "residential tower" and the "lem star system" . Sidonia is surrounded by a cluster of ships, and the only way to get around them is to sneak around them. The only way Sidonia can get around the cluster is to fight the enemy, and that's why it's so hard for them to get out of the cluster. They don't even have a day's notice to do so, because the enemy is so close. They're not even sure if they're going to be able to get past the cluster, because they've got no idea how to fight. They just have to hope that the enemy doesn't try to attack them. Meanwhile, the cluster ship is getting ready to attack Sidonia. The ship's pilot, Tsumugi, and his pilot, kunato, are on their way out to attack the enemy. The pilot says that the ship is releasing a bunch of gauna, and Sidonia has no time to wait for the enemy to attack. He's got a message for Sidonia: the ship has just released the gauna into a ring formation. The gauna are trapped inside the ring formation and can't escape. They need to hurry up and get the ship ready for attack.
