About This Chapter
In this short scene, we learn that the jousteur, who is also known as Etoile, has arrived at the royal palace of Ecbatana. He is accompanied by a group of wounded and orphaned children, and he tells the king that he has come to seek a place for them to settle in peace. The king refuses to allow him to do so, saying that the king is ill and confined to his own quarters. The knight, however, does not understand why the king would refuse to allow a loyal subject to be allowed an audience with the king. He also learns that the duke of Guiscard has seized power and imprisoned the king, and that the knight has been ordered to open the palace's doors if he should find himself in danger.
