The narrator tells us that the police recruits are supposed to do a lot of the grunt work for their superiors. He's tired and wants to be out practicing his kicks. He asks one of the officers to give him some snacks, but the officer doesn't seem to want to take a break. The narrator thanks the officer for being kind, and then he tells the officer that he's just bought some donuts from a famous place on the street. The officer says that he probably isn't used to the job yet, and the narrator tells him to take his time. He also tells him that the officer is the slowest of the lot, and that he owes the officer a hand. The captain tells the narrator that he and the chief used to drink a lot together when they were new recruits, and now that the captain is sober, he'll carry the captain home.
