This scene takes place in the countryside outside of London. Lady Dedlock is in the middle of a conversation with her husband when she hears a knock on the door. It's a knock from the Governess's servant, who has come to tell her that the old man is dead. The Governess is shocked to hear this news, but she doesn't know what else to say. She tells the servant that she's going to do some work for the people around her, and she'll be back soon.
