The narrator returns to the countryside to find that the Flower Show has been delayed by four months. He tells us that he and his friend Peter went to the flower show for the very first time, but that the people there mocked and ridiculed the lavender that they used to make their own soaps. They also mocked the crepe myrtle that they cultivated with their soaps. The narrator learns that the flower exhibition is just a place for people to show off their latest and greatest invention.
