This chapter opens with a soliloquy by the captain of the police. He tells the audience that he never wanted to serve as a police officer. He resigns from his position. He says that the people who defended him will not remember him. The captain tells him that he is not allowed to talk to anyone. He also tells the captain that he will not be allowed to see his son, who is hiding in the city of Jinhai. The officer asks the secretary to come inside to have a seat. He then tells the secretary that he has come to pick up a person who was separated from him during the fighting. The secretary says that he feels bad that he had to meet with the captain under these circumstances.
