About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator hopping out of the house and into the street. He's been listening to the circus all day, and now he's going to listen to some "real" music. The narrator doesn't like the music, and he'd rather listen to his "ranchas" and "thieving" than listen to the "circus music" of the day. He wants to go to sleep. He tells the narrator to be quiet, and to "make love to me" , and the narrator says he'll go to bed. He says he wants to get his "well earned sleep" . But the narrator isn't having it. He calls the cops and tells them to stay out of his house. He goes on to say, "I better still have the dog . . who is that ?" . And then he says, "you're fuckin' late , tie that mother fucker up, and finish moving I'm getting smokin' and they're leaving!" . He asks the narrator why book publishers are begging him to take their "money" and he says it's because they need a "hot-headed cat like you" who's happy to do what he wants. He also says that if he can draw anything they ask him to draw, he can do anything they want him to do. And that's just the way publishers need a hot-headed "cat like you," he says. He adds that if they want to mold him to their liking, then they need someone like him who'll be happy to draw all their "robots and monsters" and heroes, but unlike him, he wants "to do what you want." .
