About This Chapter
In this short scene, the police officer catches up with the young man who has been arrested on charges of carrying a gun. The young man, whose name is "Omario," thanks the officer for arresting him and asks him to send him some of his work. The officer tells him that his son is an animator in Chicago and that he might be able to help him out by sending some of the artist's work to his son. The boy says that he does not draw for kids but for grown-ups. The police officer asks him if he reads comics and he says that it is a gift that he should make use of. He tells the officer that he hopes to hear back from the mother of the man who was arrested and that she will pay for the crime. He says that the police should not have arrested the man because only a gang of dudes could have done such a thing. He asks the officer to take him back to his mother's house so that he can have a safe ride home. When the officer tells the boy that his mother is going to pay for his crime, the boy tells the police that he is lucky that the officer did not shoot him because he is the only one who knows how to do a self-portrait. He also says that if the officer had not arrested him, he would have been tossed into a dumpster. He adds that he will one day be famous enough to draw better than anyone else in the neighborhood. The cop tells the man that the club has confiscated all of the guns that were taken from the club.
