About This Chapter
Master Mingwu realizes that he has been mistaken about his daughter's identity. He apologizes for not recognizing her earlier, but she insists that she is still faithful to the Buddha. She tells him that she was desperate to return to her family, and that she had even hurt herself in order to do so. Mingwu tells her that they cannot let her live with them because she has "ill intentions" . He asks her if she has found out what has happened, and she says that she has. He says that he was just thinking of persuading Mingwu to back up his story, and now that he could save a lot of trouble, he knows that she will be punished. They finally meet again, and Mingwu says that his legs are now healed. He tells his father that the prescription he gave him was so helpful, and he says that the monks miss him so much. He goes on to say that he gave her a name, which is "gu hui," which means "friend." In the temple, they only use the name "buddhist." He explains that he used to dress in a man's clothes, so he couldn't remember her until now. After sleeping with Ling-ling, she left the temple and met Ming-wu, who immediately recognized her as a girl. He invited her to stay at his temple for several days because she looked pale. She owes him a lot, and says that her father keeps saying that a husband should pay his wife's debts. She
